Two days ago I got an email from one of my readers asking me for help. We’ll call her Ms. M. She wants to start a business online but feels very overwhelmed with all the products thrown at her to buy, and it’s causing her in the end not to trust anybody – not a big news, right?
Knowing that this is a very common thing for newbies coming online, I decide to share my thoughts on this with all of you.
First of all, if this sounds like you, don’t feel bad, most people experience being confused and overwhelmed with everything being offered online and the whole online business circus.
You can see that there are so many possibilities and ways to make money, and then there are so many more that you cannot even see from where you sit today.
So here are 7 things to consider prior to wiping out your wallet and start punching your credit card numbers on the internet in hopes of starting a business online:
1) The first thing to do is to find out what you can use from knowledge and experience you have so far that you can monetize online.
For example: if you’ve spent years in vet’s office and that is your passion, then maybe an angle in pet niche would work for you, if you’ve worked in high profile advertising firm, then maybe consulting on the subject etc….
If you are sick and tired of industry you’ve been in but have a hobby you have huge passion for – go for that.
I would suggest writing down 3-5 topics you’ have passion for and working you way through to pint point which one would you be most excited about and would work on it for years to come even if you were not making any money at it.
When you find that one, then you know you will be able to stick to doing what you need to do in order to get where you’re going, otherwise, at first sign of hard times – and there will be hard times, you will quit. (if you think about it, it’s not any different then choosing a person you’re going to be with for a very long time)
2) Put down on the paper how you really want your business to look like 2-3 years from now.
For example: if you have experience in sales and you’re really good in prospecting and selling, then maybe building an organization in MLM is for you, maybe you’d like to offer coaching and consulting on the topic of your expertise, maybe you’d like to do speaking engagements and so on.
If on the other hand you despise selling to your friends and family, MLM meetings, and interacting with people live, then maybe blogging, videos, articles and such are a better bet.
3) Look for people you can connect with who are already successful in that. And social media makes it a super possible thing today.
Find them on Facebook, Twitter…check out their personality a bit, check out how they correspond with their audience.
Find their site/blog. See how much value they offer to people who are willing to commit their time to keep coming and reading what it’s being shared on the site. Comment on their post, come back and comment again, do that for a period of time and do it in a respectful way. Not just posting “great post” “great idea” but something meaningful and something that the blog owner would see as a good conversations starter. From there, use it to foster a relationship.
4) Choose your mentor wisely. I wrote a post about my experience with mentors when I first started and you can find it here: (HINT: the more successful mentor does NOT necessarily equal success) http://www.ultimatemarketingonline.com/blog/mentors.
5) Make sure you’re expectations of your new business match the reality. Too many people have very unrealistic expectations.
Can you make money? – YES…
Can you make money fast? – YES…
if you know the right steps!- Social Media Marketing Manifesto might be a good place to start
Only very few know the right steps and have success online. Remember, 99% of people fail in online business.
Just because you just spent $2,000-3,000 on a course that promises it’s all you’ll ever need to be successful with your online business, don’t think it really is. Vast majority of courses offer great value, but they are very, very rarely “all you’ll ever need”.
6) Know what your budget is. Notice I did not say you have to have a budget. And you don’t, but it will take a bit of a time to comb through the free stuff and make some sense enough to start putting it all together. Thanks to social media, marketing does not have to cost you a dime, but learning how to properly use social media will – either in $$ or in time.
7) Be ready to pay the price. The “price” means: time, money, resources, patience – or in plain English: blood, sweat, and tears. Yes, the fruits of the labor are very, very sweet, sexy, and God knows – profitable, but they don’t happen over night and don’t come free – ever. All right, maybe when you hit a lottery or your cousin is a super internet freak
I paid the price for my success online in few different ways. But while others may have few extra memories of great time partying out on town, I have memories of what my checking account looked like last time I glanced over it, what it feels like to take time off ANY time my heart desires, and most importantly to truly see my son grow and be there with him and for him and THAT I would not trade for the world!
So if you still want to do this, sit down, grab your favorite juice or a glass of fresh water, take a pen and a paper and spend few minutes really focusing on each of the points I outlined above and write down your thoughts, fears, expectations, questions, etc…just do a bit of a brainstorming.
Only when you think you’re pretty clear on those 7 points above, and you feel like you have guts to go forward, make a promise to yourself and then do what ever it takes (within limits of moral and legal, or course!) to fulfill that promise.
See you at the top!
To YOUR ultimate success.
