There is an overall frenzy on social media platforms today spreading all across the internet. This frenzy is about adding more new friends/fans/followers…but how does it really affect the bottom line?

For most people it’s all about numbers. It’s how many new ones can you add to make your numbers larger and appear more successful. But it’s not about the quantity, it’s about quality.

What they forget is two critical things:

1)      large number of fans is not reciprocal with money earned

2)      you can’t make up your success with simply having more friends/fans/followers

As in any business out there, offline or online, the business cannot thrive without being marketed to qualified prospects. In other words, you have to find a pool of prospects who are most likely to buy your product or service from you. Social media platforms breathe the same way.

So there is much more to just creating a profile, or a fan page, posting few things on there, and inviting bunch of new friends/fans. That can take you so far, but never all the way to the bank.

Those friends and fans have to be in your target market – they have to have a predisposition to buy from you.

When deciding on your target market, resist the temptation to be too general in the hopes of getting a larger slice of the market.

The business must choose the segment of the market it can serve at a superior level…Endless research has shown customers greatly differ in their needs, perceptions, and desires. No one company can successfully fill the needs of all the customers.

How do you choose the target market?

I heard about this exercise and the incredible results it has produced, I wanted to share it with you. If you sit down and spend just a few minuets thinking about how does your ideal customer look like?

  • is it her or him
  • age
  • job
  • marital status
  • financial level
  • education level
  • what do they do for fun
  • what is their personality
  • what do they eat
  • where do the go out
  • what kind of car do they drive
  • do they have pets
  • how do they dress

and create an image in your mind. Give it a name. If you can find a person in a magazine that fully represent your ideal customer, cut it out, put it up somewhere in your work area and when you decide to create a marketing piece, or deciding on what to post as an update, look at that picture and ask yourself. How would “Mr. X” like that? What would “Mrs X want the most?” etc….the closer you can get to the ideal description of your target market, the closer you will get into their head.

The trick is not to market your product to someone, the trick is to create the product someone wants and needs.

Once you a target market chosen, now is the time to search for those on Facebook. Just go under a search function on the top of the page and type the keywords that would represent your target market. Check out the fan pages, profile pages, and groups that come up under that search, and then go to town by adding those people to your Facebook page.

Another way to find targeted prospects is to find a person or entity who is “famous”, somebody with great influence in your niche and add their friends/fans/followers.

I would not suggest adding more then 50-100 or so at the time, perhaps 2-3 time a day. Since Facebook is always on a lookout for spammers as they should be, if they pick up your adding large number of friends/fans/followers they will block you or even disable your account, but you know better, don’t you icon wink 7 Sins Of Facebook Part 4 of 7 .

Keep in mind some will accept some won’t, but eventually if you share a good content and creating relationships viral effect will take over with a little time. Afterall, you don’t need millions of them, you only need a small group of people with a sincere interest in what you have.
