creativity Is This One Mistake Sabotaging Your Productivity?I don’t know about you, but I’m a die hard when it comes to my business. Not only that I finally truly enjoy what I do, but I’m beginning to see myself for what I truly am – an internet addict.

This business I have created is my dream come true undoubtedly, but I still day in and day out find myself literally and voluntarily glued to my computer from 27 seconds after I wake up to the last 27 seconds before I hit the bedroom (…OK, on the days I actually work..)

You guessed it, that’s how long it takes me to walk up/down the stairs while half-asleep.

For months I’ve found myself in a position that once I’m downstairs and away from the computer for a few minutes I’m scrounging for paper and pen all over the house so I could write down this next awesome idea that just popped in my head.

Mind you, those ideas were some of the best ones and most profitable ones I’ve come up with.

Even though I finished two high schools in two countries on two continents in two different languages at the same time with honors, I am being completely honest with you here, it took me actually several weeks to realize what was happening!!!

I was that strongly focused on a particular target that I failed the see “the forest for the tree”: the more time I spent in front of the computer at the time, the less creative and innovative I was. It was all: oh my god, there is so much I want to get done and I was focusing on that 125%, and the ideas that could have made that effort even more efficient were not registered. It took me getting AWAY from it all to have my brain freed to come up with truly awesome ideas that always brought my business one more step ahead.

It was then that I realized that those guys that preach about taking breaks during your intense work were actually onto something…

The suggestions range from 90-120 minutes of steady work, then 10-15 minute break:

  • Walk outside and smell the air.
  • Peek outside and let the sun, maybe even rain hit your face for a minute or two.
  • Drink some water.
  • Grab a piece of fruit.
  • Go do a quick exercise routine.
  • Go fold some laundry…

anything to get you away from the computer and internet and give your brain a true recharge, a chance to approach things from a different perspective. It’s almost like “the more you chase your hot squeeze the less they want you” kinda deal.

This simple technique has gotten me out of the rut I was in while brainstorming about my new product about to be released.

It was a huge help to me, and my guess is, it can help you as well.

I urge you to try this not just for a day but maybe a several days. Keep a notepad by your computer and make a small note about the ideas you actually came up with while away from the computer – you might be surprised with what you find.

Have a personal experience with “too glued to the screen to think” moments?

I’d love to hear about it.
